Match Reports - Season 2005/06

06/05/06
Division 9
Buxted III 0, Wivelsfield Green III 5
Division 9 Champions Wivelsfield Green 3rds finished their campaign with a stylish 5 – 0 defeat of Buxted 3rds. The Green had numerous chances in the opening half an hour but Buxted’s keeper was having a blinder and foiled them with some great saves. However just before the break top scorer Lewis Sparkes rose highest at a corner and headed the Green into the lead. Shortly afterwards winger David Riley cut in from the right and doubled the lead with a low shot into the corner. The second half continued in the same vain as the first and it was all Green with Jason Streeter bossing midfield more goals would surely follow and they did, Sparkes completed his hat-trick before Dave Forde got in on the act when he smashed home from close range. This result completes a fine season for the Green which has seen them lose only 2 league games on their way to the title. Congratulations also to Andy Brown who completed his 400th game for the club in this game.

Division 1
Old Varndenians II 2, Wivelsfield Green 3
In near gale force winds, Wivelsfield Green secured a vital 3 – 2 win against Old Varndenians 2nds. Dan Butson equalised Varndenians early opener but the Green fell behind again just before half time. The turning point in the game came when Varndenians missed a penalty. The always lively Mike Mooney slid home the equaliser soon after and it was Mooney again who smashed home the winner with 15 minutes to play. Overall a good team effort in terrible conditions but hardly a vintage display.

Division 6
Wivelsfield Green II 6, Heath Pilgrims II 3
Wivelsfield Green 2nds won a barnstorming game against local rivals Heath Pilgrims 2nds in division 6. The Green raced into a 3 – 0 lead but credit to Pilgrims who made a fight of it bringing it back to 4 – 3 at one stage, the Green eventually ran out 6 – 3 winners. The goals came from Andy Potter, Pete Thomas and a brace each from Chris Netherway and Alex Stevenson. Andrew Charles Smith was MoM with a tireless midfield display.

04/02/06
Division 1
Wivelsfield Green 1, Village of Ditchling 1
A heavily depleted Wivelsfield Green put on a good display against Village of Ditchling in Division 1. Ditchling had taken an early lead but with Mark Fotiadis pulling the strings in midfield the Green bossed the first half. It was again one way traffic at the start of the second half and the Greens equaliser came when Gavin McIntosh curled home a glorious free kick. Both sides had chances late on but neither could find a winner. Stand in keeper Paul Weller and centre back Luke Morrell were both on top form for the Green.

14/01/06
Division 1
Wisdom Sports II 4, Wivelsfield Green 5
Dan Butson got Wivelsfield Green off to a flyer when his looping shot found the top corner in the opening 5 minutes against local rivals Wisdom Sports II. The game really came into life in the second half, the Green moved into a 3 – 0 lead through headers from Luke Morrell and Mark Fotiadis. Paul Foskett pulled a goal back for Sports but the Green looked out of sight when Mike Mooney and Gavin McIntosh both scored to make it 5 – 1. However 3 late goals from Sports made it an exciting finish with the Green deservedly hanging on for the 5 – 4 win.

13/12/05
Division 1
Plumpton Athletic 2, Wivelsfield Green 2
Despite having their goalkeeper sent off after 10 minutes Wivelsfield Green more than matched Division 1 leaders Plumpton. Keith ‘Bagpipes’ Dennington took over in goal and performed admirably. The Green took the lead from a Mark Fotiadis penalty but were pegged back before half time. Shane Christie struck in the second half but Plumpton again hit back. Both sides had more chances before the end in a hard fought encounter.

Mowatt Cup 2nd Round
Uckfield Town II 2 (5), Wivelsfield Green 2 (6)
Goalkeeper James Potten was the hero as Wivelsfield Green knocked out Mowatt Cup holders Uckfield II on penalities. Not only did Potten make 3 magnificent saves in the shootout but he also scored the winning penalty himself. The game finished 2 a piece after extra time with the Greens goals coming from Gavin McIntosh and midfield general Mike Mooney. Both sides had good spells and lots of chances in a game that could have gone either way before going to penalties.

05/11/05
Division 1
Wivelsfield Green 4, Barcombe 0
Wivelsfield Green and Barcombe produced some nice football in the early stages of their Division 1 match but the deadlock wasn’t broken until the half hour when Green’s Tim Reynolds turned and his shot was parried into the path of Dan Butson to tap in from close range. Keith “Bagpipes” Dennington making his green debut conjured up a piece of magic just before half time to beat 3 players and then curl a shot into the top corner. The second half was an end to end affair but two more goals for the green from Butson and Gavin McIntosh sealed a convincing win.

10/09/05
Mowatt Cup 1st Round
Sporting Lindfield 1, Wivelsfield Green 3
Wivelsfield Green started slowly in their cup match with Sporting Lindfield but as the first half progressed began to create chances, hitting the post twice before Dan Butson scored twice leave them in charge at half time. Sporting came out all guns blazing in the second half and pulled a goal back on the hour. The Green’s defence held firm with full back Paul Weller having a storming match. The tie was sewn up when Declan Murphy fed Butson to clinically complete his hatrick near the end.
