Match Reports - Season 2006/07

03/02/07
Parsons Cup Quarter Final
Wivelsfield Green III 1, Balcombe II 0
After a five week break the Third team came up against high flying Balcombe in this Parsons Cup quarter final. Balcombe started well, keeping the ball and frustrating the Green. The defence held firm as we came into the game more and the half finished goalless deservingly so. We then had an awesome second half with lots of possession and in the 70th minute the pressure told with stand skipper Chris Stacey producing a superb cross which Gavin Powell gleefully volleyed in from 12 yards. The game could have gone to extra time but for a courageous goal line clearance by Ian Barrett in the last few minutes.
Special mention must go to Andrew Charles Smith who had a superb game in centre midfield and to Paul Weller who was MoM. SE

Division 1
Wisdom Sports II 2, Wivelsfield Green 0
Wisdoms completed the league double over the First team in controversial circumstances at Hickmans Lane. We started the brighter in a scrappy first half and could have gone in front when Peanut played in Dec but he shot was smartly saved by Andy Barnes in the Wisdom goal. Wisdom began to put the pressure on as the half progressed and after a succession of dangerous corners their captain Kevin Bundy put them in front with a looping shot.
A few strong words at half time and we started brightly without really creating too many chances. Bagpipes picked up a yellow card when he mis-timed a tackle on Matt DeBruxelles but from DeBruxelles reaction you might have thought he had broken his ankle. Baggers was later sent off for an incident with one of their players which also saw him pick up a red card. Despite all this we still pushed forward but just couldnt break Wisdoms down and when we did get in our finishing just wasnt good enough. To top it off Brown Wings gave away a late penalty which was despatched by broken ankle victim DeBruxelles. The only person who thought it was a penalty was the ref and unfortunatly his opinion is the only one that counts.
A day to forget for the First team. TR

Division 6
East Grinstead Mariners 3 , Wivelsfield Green II 5
The second team finally got their act together against a poor Mariners side to register a much needed victory. Bedecked in the scintilating new baby blue and white kit (even Micky looked good) generously supplied by our own Paulo Goldinho. The green however could not do it justice in the first 15 minutes of this game quickly falling two goals behind thanks in part to some clown like defending from yours truly. Fortunately we edged our way back into the game with some bullish running from Alex "Bass Man" Stevenson and fittingly it was Mr Goldinho who bought it back to 2-1 with a clinical centre forwards finish. Before the half was up Paul Martin registered his 10th in 10 firing home in the 6 yard box. The 2nd half was one way traffic and the only surprise was it took us 25 minutes to score the 3rd goal again from the in-form Paul Martin. Thanks to Salmon's tactical genius I was pushed upfront when young Blaize entered the fray and it was not long before a defensive error put me clean through and there was only going to be one outcome…. 4-2. Having proven my genius I was replaced by young (even younger than Blaize) Billy Burton who scored our 5th with his first touch of the game, and a classy finish at that!! Some of his thunder however stolen by the fact that Paul had actually passed the ball for the first time since 1998. Mariners managed a lucky 3rd right at the death but by then the game was over! I have no idea who MOM was, I think Salmon was still trying to decide as I left the pub!!
Oh and he did give it to himself against Copthorne…unbelievable. SB

Sussex Junior Cup, 4th Round
Wivelsfield Green 2, Whitehawk III 4
Not a great day at the office for the First team. It started well enough as we bossed the first half an hour but poor final balls and dodgy finishing let us down. Whitehawk never really threatened but scored 10 minutes before half time when from a corner their centre forward acrobatically put them in front. We still had more chances to equalise after this but just couldn’t put the ball in the net. Whitehawks second came about 2 minutes after half time with a good finish from their centre midfielder. Their third really summed the game up, we had a clear 1 on 1 but missed then Whitehawk went down the other end and scored on the break, 3 – 0 with 20 minutes to go but we still felt we could get back into it. Finally we did score when Raggsy crossed the ball into the penalty area, Mooney went up for a header and was pushed, Scott Wright despatched the penalty. Then a suicidal mistake at the back gifted Whitehawk a penalty and they sealed the game. There was still time for Mooney to slip home his 5th of the season but it was too little too late. Overall though we played some good stuff but just didn’t have the rub of the green, Dave Riley on the right wing was MoM. Good luck to Whitehawk in the next round. TR

Division 6
Copthorne Rovers 3, Wivelsfield Green II 1
Possibly the strongest team the 2nds have been able to put out to date (including the return of Jabba) went up against the top of the table team with the result an unjust reflection of the game. Whilst Copthorne started strongly the mighty Green matched their physical nature and were very unlucky to go into half time one nil down to a well placed header. Wivvy played much the better football in the first half, tormenting the Copthorne defence with some good passing but unfortunately we could not take advantage of the three or four good chances we created.
Whilst Salmon went off for a half time fag the team roused themsleves for a battle in the second half. Once again it was the mighty Green who looked the better team despite having the slope and wind against us as we defended well and created a couple of chances. Unfortunately we conceeded a sloppy second, but faith was renewed when young Darryl Mclean executed a freekick with aplomb. It went down to the wire with Salmon (and I am going to regret saying this) pulling off a couple of outstanding saves, the second of which got me quite aroused! In the final ten minutes with Wivy pushing for a deserved equaliser, Copthorne hit us on the break scoring the their third goal.
Everyone played well but in my opinion Darryl McLean stood out. I suspect however Salmon as manager gave the MOM to himself for finally showing us he has some goalkeeping abilities….SB

Sussex Junior Cup, 2nd Round
Wivelsfield Green 3, Ampito 2
Brighton league side Ampito proved tricky opposition for Wivelsfield Green in the Sussex Junior Cup with the Green eventually seeing them off in extra time. Both sides started brightly but the Green took the lead when Andy Turner’s 35 yard half volley found the top corner. Ampito equalised but another wonder goal this time from the left foot of Shane Christie put the Green back in front before half time. The second half was fairly comfortable for the Green until sweeper Tommy Brown headed into his own net forcing extra time. Scott Wright’s instinctive strike, his first goal for the club won the tie in extra time.

Somerville Cup
Turners Hill II 1, Wivelsfield Green II 2
Wivelsfield Green 2nds won a hard fought but sporting contest with Turners Hill 2nds in the Somerville Cup. Paulo Goldinho’s deflected strike put the Green in front but Hill equalised on the stroke of half time. Paul Martin ran clear to slot home the winner in the second half. Stand in right back Daryl Mclean was Green’s MoM.

30/09/06
Montgomery Cup, Round 1
Wivelsfield Green 5, Hassocks III 3
Wivelsfield Green and a youthful Hassocks III served up a humdinger of a Montgomery cup tie at Janes Lane with the Green knocking out the Premier outfit 5 – 3 aet. Hassocks had led but goals from Mike Mooney, Mark O’Neill and a superb strike from Dan Butson in between Hassocks 2nd goal put the Green in control. Hassocks to their credit never gave up and equalised with the a superb free kick right on full time. Tim Reynolds leathered a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box to put the Green ahead in extra time, and they were hanging on until the very last when Mooney raced clear and lifted the ball over the keeper to seal the game.

30/09/06
Somerville Cup, Round 1
Wivelsfield Green II 6, Heath Pilgrims II 2
Despite falling 2 behind to Heath Pilgrims II in the Somerville Cup, Wivelsfield Green II ran out comfortable 6 – 2 winners. Gareth Thomas notched a superb hat-trick with Daryll Mclean, Andy Potter and Paolo Goldinho all grabbing 1 each.

23/09/06
Mowatt Cup
Wivelsfield Green 2, Buxted 0
Wivelsfield Green took the lead against Buxted in the Mowatt cup within the first minute when Mark Fotiadis ghosted into the penalty area and smashed the ball home from close range. The tone was set and Green dominated the first half, Chris Neatherway making it 2 before the break with a fine shot from the edge of the area. Buxted put 3 up front for the second half but the Green’s defence marshalled by a superb display from David Kateley held firm, at the other end the Green had numerous more good chances but failed to add to their total.

Division 6
Bolney Rovers 1 Wivelsfield Green II 6
Wivelsfield Green 2nds in Division 6 continued their promising start to the season with a slick demolition of Bolney Rovers. The goals came from Gareth Thomas (2), Andy Potter, Tristan Robinson, David Riley and Michael Everest. The Green would have added quite a few more had it not been for the heroics of the Bolney keeper.

16/09/06
Division 1
Wivelsfield Green 2, Rotherfield 0
Wivelsfield Green secured their first win of the season with a comfortable 2 – 0 defeat of Rotherfield. The Green were on top from the start without any real end product in the first half. It was Chris Neatherway who gave the Green the lead on 60 minutes with a neat finish at the near post, Alex Stevenson added a second in similar fashion soon after. More goals should have followed but finishing let the Green down. Green’s manager Sam Brasier was thrilled with the win and described his side’s football as “lovely stuff”
